The History of WTM
In Historic DeKalb County, an Illustrated History by Vivian Price; Williams, Turner & Mathis, Inc. is recognized as one of the long standing businesses in DeKalb County, Georgia. As the dynamic and prosperous 1960’s came to a close, Raymond S. Williams, Jr left a successful career as one of the top agents for Sentry Hardware Mutual to establish his own independent insurance agency opening July 1, 1970. The Raymond S. Williams Agency, Inc. had two employees with an office on Montreal Road in Tucker, GA and contracts with two major insurance companies, Fireman’s Fund and Royal Globe.
When the office was opened Ray Jr’s wife, Helen was co-owner and office manager. His son Ray III began working in the agency when he was a student at Georgia State University and has remained with the firm since 1972. Due to the strong foundation, values and reputation established by Ray, Jr the firm was able to survive his untimely passing due to a heart attack in 1977. Helen was elected President and Ray III was named Secretary-Treasurer. Lynn, Ray Jr’s daughter, began work with the firm when she was a teenager and after graduating from the University of Georgia 1978 joined the firm full time. The family united to carry forward Ray Jr’s vision of the roll a strong independent agency should play in the lives of it’s clients and employees.
A reorganization of the agency in 1983 put the ownership of the agency in the hands of Ray III, Lynn and another partner who was bought out in 1992. In 1983 the offices were moved next door to the current location at 2009 Montreal Rd. In 1995 Raymond S. Williams Agency merged with another local agency which had also been founded in 1970, Farmer, Heinz, Smither and Turner. Out of that merger came Williams, Turner & Mathis, Inc. Ten years later in 2005, Phillip Turner retired; leaving the ownership of the agency with Ray Williams III, CEO and Lynn Mathis, COO.
The agency has grown over the years and now has over 20 employees and contracts with many different outstanding insurance carriers. The opportunity to assist clients with their personal and business insurance needs in a professional, friendly, and trustworthy manner was the vision of Ray Williams Jr, in 1970 and this commitment continues to lead the current team at Williams, Turner & Mathis today.
